Best Way To Sell A Boat

By: Kavin Chai

As someone who used to sell boats for a living, people often ask me how they should go about selling their boat. They want to know the best way to describe it, where to advertise and what price to list it for, among other things.
There is no true, ‘best way’ to sell a boat. It all depends on the person selling, why they are selling and what kind of boat that they have. There are a few tried and true ways to advertise your boat for boat yard to sell it for you. If you are going to buy a new boat from a dealer, maybe you could just trade it in on your next purchase. Then there are ways to sell your boat yourself. You can list it online at a good boat sales website, or if you are into the old ways, list it in boating newspapers or classified ads. Lastly, but not really least, you can whack a for sale sign on your boat, especially if it is docked somewhere busy, or if you have it on a trailer in a busy street.
The main decision you have to take is whether you want to sell your boat yourself or if you want someone else to do it for you. This will often depend on how quickly you need to sell the boat and how busy your day to day schedule is.
Selling your boat yourself is not necessarily going to get you the most amount of money. It depends on how good your selling skills are and again how much time you have to invest in showing it to people and taking phone enquiries for your boat. Many people get tired of trying to sell their boat and end up accepting a lower offer simply because they can no longer be bothered meeting potential buyers.
A good boat salesperson will sell your boat for a good price and often after their commission has been deducted you will still walk away with more money. They also take care of the legal details and paperwork for you, so you don’t have to spend the time on that either.
Even as an older person, it is obvious that the internet has become a very popular tool for buying and selling boats, and rightly so. Even someone like me with little computer knowledge can get on the net and find loads of boats for sale quickly. On larger boat sales websites you not only find boats for sale privately, but also advertised by dealers. Believe me, if dealers are spending money to advertise on a website, then it must be worth it for you to do that to.
I think it is important to describe your boat accurately on the web or in other ads. There is no point making it sound better than it is, because you will just waste time meeting people who quickly become disinterested. Personally I like to advertise a starting price straight up, for the same reason as before. You don’t want to waste time speaking to people who could never afford your boat. This can be different for a dealer, because they can always try to sell a cheaper boat to any enquiry.
From my knowledge I would choose a busy website with a fixed low rate for a certain time period.
The best way I think to sell a boat is to use a variety of different techniques so that you will attract a variety of interested people to come and see your boat or to call up and ask for more information about it. As with most things that you sell, the less of a hurry you are in to sell, the better price you will get. So once you are considering selling your boat, start to list it at inexpensive places, that can often save you the stress of being in a rush to sell at a later date.
As a keen boater myself, I hope you are selling your boat because you want to buy a new one. There is nothing better than setting off on a trip after you have just bought a new boat.
